Beginnings

"Beginning is not only a kind of action.
It is also a frame of mind, a kind of work, an attitude, a consciousness."
~Edward Said

"The beginning of things,
of a world, especially,
is necessarily vague, tangled, chaotic,
and exceedingly disturbing."
~Kate Chopin

"If we don't start, it's certain we can't arrive."
~Zig Ziglar

"It is the nature of beginning
something new is started
which cannot be expected from whatever may have happened before.
This character of startling unexpectedness is inherent to all beginnings."
~Hannah Arendt

"Things are always at their best in their beginnings."
~Blaise Pascal

"Never lose an opportunity to use a practical beginning,
however small,
for it is wonderful how often in such matters
the mustard seed germinates and roots itself."
~Florence Nightingale

What the Sea Taught Me about Marriage

But let there be spaces in your togetherness

and let the winds of the heavens dance between you.

Love one another but make not a bond of love:

let it rather be a moving sea between the shores of your souls.

 ~Kahil Gibran

 Freshen the Flowers, She Said

Mary Oliver

So I put them in the sink, for the cool porcelain
    was tender,
and took out the tattered and cut each stem
   on a slant,
trimmed the black and raggy leaves, and set them all--
    roses, delphiniums, daisies, iris, lilies,
and more whose names I don't know, in bright new water--
    gave them

a bounce upward at the end to let them take
their own choice of position, the wheels, the spurs,
the little sheds of the buds. It took, to do this,
    perhaps fifteen minutes.
Fifteen minutes of music
    with nothing playing.

(from WHY I WAKE UP EARLY)

The Language of Sky

The Language of Sky

Ally Acker

I've moved on. I hope you can too.

And just like that, I am lost.

It is possible we will not meet

again in this life. Only the naked sky connecting

our far away worlds. When I get lonely I look up.

How are you feeling? Are you happy?

Nothing. Blue, blank, benign stare. I plead with the air.

But it's no use. I am like a leaf floating.

A disciple of wind. Devotee of neither branch

nor ground.

Little by little, I learn to take the sky at its word.
