In her book The Leaf and the Cloud,
Mary Oliver speaks of a poem this way:
It wants to open itself,
like the door of a little temple,
so that you might step inside and be cooled and refreshed,
and less yourself than part of everything.
When your heart doors open,
your become "less yourself than part of everything."
Many are the sentinels who guard that door:
our fears, our self-importance,our meanness,
our greed, our bitterness...
Yet, one good poem can slip past them all.
