Time cannot break the bird's wing from the bird.

Bird and wing together

Go down, one feather.

 

No thing that ever flew,

Not the lark, not you,

Can die as others do.

 

時間無法拆散鳥翼。

Edna St. Vincent Millay (1892-1950) 才華洋溢

從高中時期就開始寫詩

作風大膽前衛

非常有魅力，受許多男性與女性的愛慕

她認為女人有權利像男人一樣縱慾放蕩

堪稱當今女性情慾自主的先驅者

他在1917年 從 Vassar College 畢業時出版了一本詩集 《再生集》Renascence and Other Poems

立刻影響當時文壇的注意

許多評論認為Millay 的十四行詩 sonnets 幾乎可以與莎士比亞媲美了

Millay 過者波西米亞式的生活 酗酒 嗑藥 又縱慾

在58歲時的一個清晨 昏沉沉摔下樓梯 扭斷脖子 而早逝

讓人不禁想到他這首詩:

My candle burns at both ends;

It will not last the night;

But ah, my foes, and oh, my friends--

It gives a lovely light!
